Wisdom Teeth Removal: After The Procedure

While the actual surgical procedure is pretty serious, it’s what happens after you leave our office that is extremely important. Pain and complications can be reduced if the patient follows the procedures that we lay out. Below are a few ways that you can avoid feeling addition pain and discomfort after your wisdom teeth removal procedure:

Minimize Bleeding

A certain amount of bleeding is going to happen following your procedure. If placing a gauze over the affected area is not enough, try biting down on a moistened tea bag for a half hour. Just be sure not to become overly excited, sit upright and do not exercise.

Ice It Down

Swelling around the cheeks, mouth, side of the face and eyes is not uncommon. It happens and it can last a few days. You can however minimize swelling by using ice packs or baggies filled with ice. These should be left on while you are awake. After 36 hours, switch to moist heat to reduce the size of the swelling.

Reduce The Pain

If you are in pain, try one of two tablets of regular Tylenol, Extra Strength Tylenol or Ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil).

A Clean Mouth Is A Healthy Mouth

Following surgery, you can brush your teeth, but rinse gently. The next day, you should rinse at least 5 to 6 times a day with a warm cup of water mixed with a teaspoon of salt.

Also, you will want to avoid the use of straws. The sucking motion can dislodge the blood clot and lead to more bleeding. Drink from a glass and stay hydrated. Your liquid intake is extremely important since your food intake will be limited for the first few days.
